PART 1_ 마리나의 한국 워홀비자 취득이야기

W(워홀프렌즈): 안녕하세요, 자기소개 부탁드려요.
M(마리나): 저는 마르세유에서 고등학교를 다니다가 파리에서 2년동안 공부하면서 1년동안 한국어를 배웠어요.

W: 한국 워킹홀리데이 비자에 대한 정보는 어디서 얻게 되었나요?
M: 프랑스 내 한국 대사관을 통해서 알게 되었어요. 더 자세한 정보는 구글에서 검색해서 알았어요. 주로 일자리나 호스텔 정보를 접할 수 있었어요.

 

W: 왜 한국으로 왔나요?
M: 제 꿈은 전문적인 댄서가 되는 것인데 특히 힙합에 관심이 많아요. 그런데 한국과 일본이 힙합댄스가 유명해서 오게 되었어요.

 

W: 그럼 지금 한국에서 댄스 수업을 듣고 있는 건가요?
M: 네. 나중에 한국이나 일본에서 댄서로 일을 하게 되면 매우 좋을 것 같아요.

 

W: 한국말도 할 줄 알고 한국문화도 이해하고 있으니 한국에서 활동하는 데에 더 큰 도움이 될 것 같아요~
M: 사실 수업시간에 하는 한국말은 알아들을 수는 없어요. 선생님의 말씀을 다 이해하지 못해서 그냥 보고 따라하는 정도예요

 

W: 한국 워홀은 어떻게 준비했나요?
M: 프랑스에서는 워홀을 위해 많은 서류를 요구해요. 가족, 나이, 목적 등의 정보를 담은 서류를 필요로 하죠. 이것들을 준비하고 한국 대사관으로 가서 신청하면 되요. 저는 이 과정을 부모님과 함께 준비했어요.

 

W: 프랑스에서 온라인을 통해서 한국에 대한 정보를 얻는 것이 쉬웠나요?
M: 네, 물론이죠. 보통 구글을 통해서 많은 정보를 접했어요. 또, 프랑스에 있는 한국인 친구들을 통해서 얻었어요.

 

W: 한국에서는 워홀비자를 얻는 동안 온라인을 통해 외국에 대한 정보를 얻는 것을 위험하게 생각하는데 프랑스에선 어떤가요?
M: 프랑스 사람들은 한국이 매우 안전하다고 생각해요. 한국을 파라다이스로 생각하기도 하죠!

 

W: 프랑스에서 일본 워홀 비자도 인기 많은 것 같던데 어떤가요?
M: 일본비자는 신청자 수가 너무 많아서 비자를 따는 것이 쉽지 않아요. 대신 한국은 그보다는 더 쉬워요.

 

W: 혹시 일본으로도 갈 생각있나요?
M: 네, 저는 사실 일본어를 4년동안 공부했어요. 일본으로 가고 싶지만 물가가 너무 비싸서 고민되요.. 지금으로선 갈 수 없어요..

 

W: 왜 프랑스 사람들이 일본을 더 좋아한다고 생각하나요?
M: 일본 만화나 귀여운 코스프레가 유명하고 뭐 그런 것들 때문이죠~
일본 원자력 사고 때문에 사람들이 걱정하기는 하지만 여전히 인기가 많아요.

 

PART 2_ 마리나의 한국 정착기

 

W: 한국 언제 왔나요?
M: 올해 6월 25일에 왔어요. 한 달 정도 됐어요. 수요일이었어요! 아직도 기억해요.

 

W: 그날은 한국전쟁이 일어난 날이에요, 알고 있었어요?
M: 어머, 그랬어요? 몰랐네요. 유감이네요…

 

W: 프랑스에는 언제 돌아갈 예정이에요?
M: 비자는 내년 6월 3일에 만기이지만 11월에 잠깐 프랑스에 갔다가 다시 한국으로 돌아올 거예요. 워홀 비자가 만기 되면 워킹비자를 받고 싶어요.

W: 그럼 지금 어디에 살고 있어요?
M: 고시원이요! 한 달에 45만원 정도 해요. 강남구 역삼에 있어서 비싼가봐요공동욕실이 있지만 저는 개인욕실이 딸린 원룸에 살아요.

 

W: 고시원에 마리나 같은 외국인도 많이 사나요?
M: 네, 프랑스 친구 몇몇도 고시원에 살고 있어요.

 

W: 왜 고시원에 살게 되었어요?
M: 원래는 홈스테이에 살려고 했는데 하루에 6만원씩 내야했어요.. 너무 비싸죠.. 한달에 180만원이에요… 홈스테이 부킹이라는 홈페이지에서 찾았는데 전문적으로 홈스테이를 하는 집들이 올라와있어요. 대부분 비싸요.

 

W: 그럼 홍대나 이태원에 있는 쉐어하우스는 안가봤나요?
M: 네… 저는 혼자 있는 게 더 좋아요… 기숙사같이 여러 사람이 함께 사는 것은 별로 안 좋아해요.

 

W: 한국 온지 한 달 됐는데 어떤 것이 가장 힘들어요?
M: 바로 어제요. 어제가 엄마 생신이었는데 가족을 못봐서 슬펐어요. 하지만 한국에 있어서 행복해요.

 

 

 

PART 3_마리나의 직장이야기

 

W: 지금 어디서 일하고 있어요?
M: 3주전부터 알리바이라는 강남의 펍에서 일하고 있어요.

 

W: 일하는 데 힘든 점은 없어요?
M: 사장님이요. 하하하 뉴욕 출신 사장인데 앞에서는 잘해주고 뒤에서는 안 좋은 이야기를 하더라구요… 한국에서 14년동안 살았는데 한국말도 할 줄 몰라요!

 

W: 일하는 곳의 동료들은 어때요?
M: 오, 다들 너무 좋아요. 얼마 전 일을 그만둔 한국인을 제외하고는 다들 외국인인데 인도, 프랑스, 홍콩출신이에요.

 

W: 동료들도 워홀비자인가요?
M: 학생비자도 있고 워홀비자도 있어요. 학생비자는 6개월동안 대학에서 공부를 해야 일을 할 수 있어요. 근데 교육비가 너무 비싸요..

 

W: 일은 하루에 몇 시간 정도 하나요?
M: 오후 다섯시부터 새벽 2시정도까지 해요.

 

W: 손님들은 어때요?
M: 부자 한국인들이나 외국인 손님들이 많아요. 한국인들은 대부분 변호사나 비즈니스맨들이 많이 와요. 제일 싼 맥주가 9천원이에요… 안주도 비싸요! 가끔 한국 손님들이 예쁘다면서 관심을 많이 가져줘요. 하지만 노땡큐예요^^

 

W: 손님들하고는 한국어로 대화하나요?
M: 거의 영어로 해요. 초반에는 간단한 한국어 인사를 준비까지 했는데 손님들이 들어오자마자 hey~하면서 영어로 주문하더라구요. 오히려 맞아요. 한국손님들이 오히려 영어로 대화하고 싶어하더라구요. 오히려 제가 한국말로 인사를 건네면 한국 손님들이 엄청 놀래요. 정말 재밌어요.

 

W: 지금 그곳에서 일하는 것에 장점은 뭔가요?
M: 다양한 사람을 만날 수 있어서 너무 좋아요. 다들 친절하고 착해요. 바쁘지 않을 땐 수다떠는 것이 재밌어요. 또, 댄스음악을 들으면서 일할 수 있고 분위기가 너무 좋아요.

 

W: 단점은요?
M: 사장님이요!.. 가끔 초과근무를 시켜요.. 물론 난 의자와 테이블을 혼자서 다 치울 수 있기 때문에 저한테 마감업무를 시키는데 가끔 새벽 2시에 일이 끝나요.. 오, 방금 사장한테 내일 일할 수 있냐고 문자가 왔는데 안볼거예요ㅎㅎㅎ

 

W: 시급은 어때요?
M: 6천원이에요. 만약 스페셜 맥주를 팔면 팁을 받기도 해요.

 

W: 프랑스에서는 시급이 어떤가요?
M: 하는 일에 따라 달라요. 특히 프랑스에는 실업급여 제도가 있는데 실업자에게 7개월에서 1년까지 한 달에 1000유로를 지급해요. 최저임금 같은 거예요. 18살부터 받을 수 있어요.

 

W: 이 얘기를 들으니 저희도 프랑스에 가고 싶네요.
M: 저는 좋다고 생각하지 않아요.. 왜냐하면 사람들이 이 제도 때문에 일하려고 하지 않기 때문이에요. 한국의 경우가 더 낫다고 생각해요.

 

W: 한국은 최저 시급이 5천원인데 괜찮다고 생각해요?
M: 아니요 저는 새벽 2시까지 의자와 테이블을 옮기는 데 5천원은 좀… 어제도 단체손님30명이 왔는데 혼자 했어요!

 

W: 한국와서 일은 어떻게 구했어요?
M: 되게 쉬웠어요 한국에 온 지 온라인으로 10일만에 구했어요. 프랑스에서는 이력서 100장은 돌려야되요… 아마 여기에선 외국인 잡이어서 쉬웠던 것 같아요

W: 한국에서 일을 구할 때 요구하는 것은 어떤 것이 있었나요?
M: 해당 구청에 가서 만든 외국인ID카드, 은행계좌, 이력서 등을 준비해 갔어요. 계약서도 쓰지 않았고 그냥 면접 10분보고 바로 고용됐어요.

 

W: 다른 일을 찾고 싶나요?
M: 네, 하지만 지금은 찾고 있지 않아요. 조만간 댄스팀 오디션을 볼건데 댄스팀에 들어가게 되면 일하는 곳을 관둘거에요. 왜냐하면 내가 한국에 온 목적은 댄서가 되는 거니까요. 알리바이에서 일하는 것은 그저 부모님의 지원을 덜 받기 위해서예요. 혼자서 해내고 싶거든요.

 

 

 

PART 4_마리나에게 묻는 '한국'질문!

 

W: 한국에서 여행도 하고 싶나요?
M: 물론이죠! 남한 이곳 저곳을 다 가보고 싶어요. 다음주에 친구 초대로 광주에 놀러가요. 새로 생긴 클럽에서 파티를 즐길거예요.

 

W: 한국에서 어디를 가장 가고 싶어요?
M: 제주도요! 물론 한국 전체가 멋지지만 많은 사람들이 제주도를 추천하더라구요.

 

W: 한국 날씨는 적응할 만해요?
M: 12살 때 중국에 가본 적이 있는데 중국과 비슷한 것 같아요. 지금은 여름이지만 저는 추위를 더 잘타서 여름날씨도 견딜만해요. 그런데 비오는 것은 싫어요. 하지만 기후는 저한테 적당한 것 같아요.

W: 한국문화는 어떤 것이 좋아요?
M: 춤, 문화 그리고 음식이요! 한국 음식은 최고예요! 특히 비빔밥이 좋아요. 고추장이 너무 맛있어요. 매운 걸 좋아하거든요. 그런데 떡볶이는 너무 매워요.. 30분동안 입에 불나는 줄 알았어요! 그리고 한국 역사에도 관심이 많아요. 많이 아는 것은 없지만 배우고 싶어요. 고등학교 때 한국의 식민지화와 일본과의 관계에 대해서 배웠어요.

 

W: 프랑스 친구들에게 한국 워홀을 추천해줄 생각이 있나요?
M: 네, 물론이에요. 단 그들이 워홀의 목적이 있다면요. 제 친구 중에 한명은 한국남자와 결혼하기 위해서 한국 워홀을 온 애가 있어요. 매일 밤 클럽에 가는 데 그건 아닌거 같아요.

 

W: 한국에서 차별은 받은 적 없었나요?
M: 네, 저는 없었어요. 다들 너무 잘해줘요. 그런데 한 흑인 남자가 한국인에게 차별 받았다는 얘기를 들었어요. 또, 저희 가게에서 외국 손님들이 한국 사람들을 욕하는 것을 들었는데 한국에서 먹고 살면서 왜 그러는지 모르겠어요.

 

W: 한국인 친구는 어떻게 사귀고 있나요?
M: 프랑스에도 한국인 친구 있고 직장에서 만난 한국인도 있어요. 프랑스에서는 매주 토요일마다 세 시간씩 한국-프랑스 모임이 있었어요. 각자 명찰을 달고 두명씩 짝지어 대화하는 형식이었죠. 한국에는 이런 것이 없어서 아쉬워요.

 

PART 5_ 프랑스의 워홀 인식 알아보기

W: 프랑스에서 보험은 들고 왔나요?
M: 네. 프랑스에서는 외국에 사는 프랑스인을 위한 보험이 있어요. 보통 보험보단 비싸지만 6개월간 200유로(30만원)를 내야해요. 프랑스에서 워홀 비자를 얻으려면 보험이 의무예요. 이 보험은 아프거나 상해 등의 위험을 다 보장해줘요.

W: 프랑스에는 한국의 워홀 인포센터 같은 것이 있나요?
M: 없어요. 프랑스에서는 워홀이 유명하지 않아요. 사람들이 잘 몰라요. 친구들이 물어볼때마다 설명해줘야 돼요. 한국이나 일본을 좋아하는 프랑스 사람들만 워홀을 알아요.

 

W: 어른들은 워킹홀리데이에 대해서 어떻게 생각하나요?
M: 어른들도 잘 몰라요. 그냥 비자인 줄 알아요.

W: 그러면 한국으로 일하러 간다고 했을 때 부모님이 걱정하지 않으셨나요? 한국은 분단국가라는 걱정 이런것들..
M: 저는 한국 오기 전에 내내 한국에 진짜 가고 싶다고 얘기를 해와서 부모님은 크게 걱정하지 않으셨어요. 북한이 아니라 남한에 가는 거니까요.

 

 

마무으리_마리나의 앞으로의 계획을 말해줘요!

W: 아시아에서 프로댄서로 활약하고 싶다고 했는데 만약에 댄스팀과 계약을 하게 되면 한국에 더 있을 생각이 있어요?
M: 그렇게 되면 비자종류를 바꿔야 되요. 워홀 비자가 만기가 됐을 때 한국에서 댄서로 일을 하려면 워킹비자를 받아야 해요.
우선 워홀을 무사히 마치고 차근차근 계획이 실행되었으면 좋겠네요^^

 

 

 

PART1_Getting Workingholiday visa!

 

W(Wohol Friends): Hello, please introuduce yourself.
M(Marina): After I attended high school in Marseille, I studied in Paris for 2 years. When I was in Paris, I learned Korean for 1 year.

W: Where did you get information about Korean working holiday?
M: I got the information of Korea working holiday visa from Korean Embassy in France. When I needed more specific information of Korea, I searched at Google. I could find the information on youth hostel and jobs.

 

W: Why did you choose Korea?

M: My dream is to be a professional dancer. Particularly I’m interested in Hip-hop. The Korea and Japan is famous for Hip-hop dance. That’s why I chose the Korea.

W: Then are you attending dance class in Korea?

M: Yes. I hope to become a dancer in Korea or Japan.

 

W: You can speak Korean and understand Korean culture therefore your effort will be helpful for your future career.

M: Actually, I can’t understand Korean when I take classes. So I just tried to repeat after teacher.

W: How did you prepare Korean working holiday?
M: In France, I needed so many papers to be issue working holiday visa. I had to provide my age, family information and the goal of working holiday. After preparing those documents, I went to Korea Embassy to apply for the Korean working holiday visa. I did this preparation with my parents.

W: In France, was it easy to learn about Korea through online?

M: Sure. Usually I used Google to find information. And I got the information from Korean friends who lived in France.

 

W: When Korean people acquire working holiday visa, they worry about getting inaccurate information of other countries where they will stay through online. How about French people?

M: French people don't think that Korea is dangerous. Rather, they think Korea is a pardasie!

W: I think Japanese working holiday visa is also popular in France. What do you think?
M: Since there are so many applicants who want to get Japanese working holiday visa, it is really hard to get it. But it is much easier to get Korean working holiday visa.

 

W: Have you got a plan to stay in Japan someday?
M: Yes, actually I learned Japanese for 4 years. I hope to go to Japan but I can’t. Because living cost in Japan is so high.

 

W: Why do you think that French people want to stay in Japan more than in Korea?
M: That’s because of Japanese cartoon and cute costume play. People are worried about radiation but Japan is still popular.

 

PART 2_Marina is Living in Korea!

W: When did you arrive in Korea?
M: I came to Korea on June 25th. About 1 month ago. It was Wednesday! I remember that still now.

W: That day was an anniversary of Korean war. Did you know that?

M: I didn’t know that. I’m sorry about that.

W: When are you planning to go back to France?
M: My visa will be expired on June 3 next year. I will go to France on November this year, but I will be back to Korea again. By the time my working holiday visa gets expired, I hope to get a working visa.

W: Where are you staying now?
M: Now I live in ‘Gosiwon’. The price is 450000won for 1 month. I guess the room is expensive because it located in Gangnam. There are public washrooms in ‘Gosiwon’. But I use my privat shower room.

W: Do other foreigners like you live in Gosiwon?
M: Yes. Some of my French friends live in Gosiwon.

 

W: Why did you choose Gosiwon?

M: At the first time, my plan was to do Home stay. But it is so expansive for me to pay 60000won per 1day. It’s about 1800000won per month. I searched the homestay from the website the name of it is Homestay Booking. Most of them are expensive.

W: Haven't you tried sharehouses in Hongdae or Itawon?
M: No, I haven't. I prefer to stay alone. I don’t like to live in the dormitory..

W: One month is already passed. When are you depressed since arriving in Korea?

M: Just yesterday. My mother’s birthday was yesterday but I couldn't see her. so I felt sad but I am happy to stay in Korea.

 

 

 

PART 3_Marina's workplace

 

 

W: Where are you working?

M: I work in Pub (Alibi) which is in Gangnam.

W: Is there any difficulty while working there?

M: The boss. He is from New-york. He is nice in front of the people but talks badly behind their back. Although he has lived in Korea for 14 years, He can’t speak Korean at all.

W: How about your co-workers?
M: I really like them. They are all foreigners who are from India, France and Hong kong.

 

W: Do your college have working holiday visas?
M: Some of them have working holiday visa but others have student visa. They who have student visa can work after attending university Korean class for 6 month. But the education fee is so expensive.

 

W: How long do you work per day?

M: I work from 5pm to 2am.

W: How about the customers of your workplace?

M: There are many rich Koreans and foreigner customers. Most of Koreans are lawyers or business men. The cheapest beer is 9000won. Side dishes are also expensive. Sometimes the customers show their personal interest to me by saying 'you are beautiful'. But no thanks.

W: Do you speak to your customers in Korean?

M: Mostly I speak in English. First time, I prepared some simple Korean sentences to say ‘hello’. But customers order in English.

W: Then you must be disappointed that you have no chance to speak in Korean while working.
M: Yes, it’s true. Korean rather prefer to speak in English. But whenever I say hello to people by speaking in Korean, they are really surprised. It’s fun.

 

W: Is there a good point about your workplace?

M:It’s really nice to meet diverse people. They are nice and kind. It’s funny to chat with them.

W: How about a bad point?

M: The boss! Sometimes he forces me to work overtime and last-minute tasks because I can arrange the chair and table by myself. So sometimes I finish my work at 2am. Oh, right now my boss send me the message to ask me whether I can work tomorrow or not. But I don’t want to see this. haha

W: How much is your wage per hour?

M:It’s 6000won. If I sell the special beer, sometimes I get the tips.

W: I'm curious about wage in France.

M: It depends on the work what you do. Specially, in France, there are unemployment benefits. Unemployment can get 1000 euro per 1month for 7month to 1year from 18years-old.

W: Oh, that's a good system, isn't it?

M: I don’t think it’s good. People don’t want to work because this system. Korean system is better.

W: Korean minimum wage is just 5000won. Are you happy with this pay?
M: No. It’s not enough to get 5000won per 1hour by comparison with working such as arranging the tables and chairs to 2am. Although thirty people in group came to pub yesterday, I worked alone.

 

W: How did you get this job?

M: It was really easy. I got a job in 10days after when I came to Korea. In France, we have to submit about 100 resume.

W: What kind of documents did the owner of your workplace require?

M: I prepared the foreigner ID card which was issued from district office, bank account and resume. I didn’t sign the contract. I was hired just after having interview for 30minutes.

W: Are you happy with your current job or are you looking for another job?

M: At the momet, I don't want to find another one. If I can enter the dance team, I will quit the job. My goal is to be a dancer in Korea. The reason that I work in the Pub(alibi) is to receive less money from my parents. I want to make it by myself.

 

 

PART 4_Quesntions about 'KOREA'

 

W: Do you want to travel Korea?
M: Sure. I hope to go around everywhere in South Korea. Next week, I will go to Gwang-ju by invitation of my friends.

 

W: Where do you want to travel?

M: Je-ju island! It’s true that all the places of Korea are nice but many people recommend Jeju island to me.

W: Are you okay with this hot weather?

M: I went to China when I was 12years-old. Weather in Korea is similar with weather in China. I feel much cold in winter than heat in summer. Actually I don’t like the rainy day. But the weather is suitable for me.

W: What kind of Korean culture do you like?
M: Dance, culture and food! The Korean food is the best. Particularly I like ‘Bibimbob’. ‘Gochujang’ is so delicious. I love the spicy food. But the ‘Ddok bok gi’ is so spicy. I feel like my mouth was burning. And I’m interested in Korean History. I don’t know much of it but I want to learn about it. When I was high-school student, I learn about Japan’s colonization of Korea the relation between Korea and Japan.

W: Are you positive to recommend Korean working holiday to your French friends?
M: Sure. But just in the case that they have a goal to work in Korea. One of my friends came to Korea to marry Korean guy. She goes to club every night. I think it’s not good.

 

W: Have you been discriminated in Korea?
M:No, I haven’t. People are always nice to me. But I heard the Black guy was discriminated against Korean. And I heard some foreigners swear at Korean. I don’t know why they do that though they live in Korea.

W: How do you make Korean frinends?
M: I have Korean friends who met in France and from my working place in Korea. In France, there is Korean-French meeting every Saturday for 3hours. They wear the name tag each and communicate with each other. It is to be regretted that there isn’t the meeting in Korea that I present above.

 

 

PART 5_ How French think W.H

W: Have you bought an insurance in France?

M: Yes. In France, there is insurance for the French who live in other countries. It is expensive than normal insurance. I pay 200uro for 6month. It is obligation to have insurance to get working holiday visa. It guarantees all of jury and illness.

W: In France, is there a community or a government center like wokring infocenter of Korea?
M: No. Working holiday is not famous in France. Most of people don’t know well. When friends ask about working holiday, I always have to explain what is that. Some French who like Korea or Japan know working holiday.

 

W: Are senior people positive or negative to working holiday program?
M: They don’t know well. They just think the same with normal visa.

W: But didn't your parents concern that you choose to go to Korean which is a divided country because of the war?
M: I always said to my parent that I really hope to go South Korea. So my parents didn’t worried about that. It’s South Korea. Not North Korea.

 

 

Epliog_What's Marina's future plan?

W: You said you want to be a pro dancer in Asia. If you make a contract with dance team in Korea, will you stay longer than you expected?
M: I need to change my visa status for that. When my Working Holiday visa expires, I need to get a job visa. I just wish to finish my Working Holiday In Korea first and activate my future plan gradually.
