Hospitals: Clinics and General Hospitals

There are two main types of medical institutions in Korea. Primary health care institutions include local clinics, public health centers, and small hospitals that treat common illnesses such as colds, the flu, and digestive problems. General hospitals, including specialized and university hospitals, provide treatment for more serious conditions and detailed medical examinations.

Foreign nationals who stay in Korea for more than six months are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). For inquiries about enrollment or exemption, please contact NHIS at 1577-1000. For foreign-language assistance, press 7 or call 033-811-2000.

Foreign nationals who are covered by foreign laws, foreign insurance, or an employer’s contract may apply for exemption from National Health Insurance. Please contact NHIS before making your first payment, as NHIS has full authority to review and approve exemption applications.

Coverage under foreign laws may include an intergovernmental agreement for France, home-country coverage for medical expenses for Japan, and medical coverage for government officials, military personnel, retirees, and their family members for the United States and the United Nations.
